Kentucky coffeetree can be found on river floodplains like areas of Leslie Woods, which is part of the Traver Creek watershed. What really makes the tree notable are its fruits, which are rounded seeds in a stout pod. The seeds resemble coffee beans, and they were actually roasted and used as a poor coffee substitute by early settlers. Kentucky coffeetrees used to be a species of special concern in Michigan, but thankfully, they were recently removed from the special species list.
Meet at the park entrance at the north end of Upland Drive, north of Plymouth Road. Workday sites have unpaved trails and require going off-trail.
Preregister through VolunteerHub so NAP can plan on enough staff and supplies for a safe and successful event. For your safety, wear long pants, tall socks, and closed-toe shoes. All minors should be accompanied by a guardian. More information: How to prepare for a NAP workday (PDF).
