The Great Lakes Islands Alliance (GLIA) is pleased to host this free meeting for Great Lakes island leaders, residents, and advocates.

Presentation Description:

Dave will share results from the “The Nature of Americans, A National Initiative to Understand and Connect Americans and Nature.” This 2017 study was a collaborative effort between DJ Case & Associates and the late Dr. Stephen Kellert, professor emeritus at Yale University. Comparisons to related studies conducted with Canadians will be included. Dave will offer his take on the implications of these studies for conserving nature, attracting visitors and marketing Great Lakes Islands.

Presenter Bio:

Dave began his career studying white-tailed deer on North Manitou Island for the National Park Service. Now, 40 years later (and about 40 miles away) he lives and works on the south end of Beaver Island for seven months each year. When conditions are just right, he can see North Manitou Island on the horizon from his Beaver Island porch. Controversy surrounding the management North Manitou Island’s deer herd gave Dave a crash course on the “people” side of wildlife management. After completing his master’s research on the Island, he took a position with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks and soon was appearing on weekly radio and TV programs, speaking to civic organizations and schools and learning both the art and science of communications. In 1986, Dave launched DJ Case & Associates, a company focused on applying communications disciplines to wildlife conservation and environmental protection. Since that time, he has worked with nearly every state and federal natural resources agency in the United States and many major state and national conservation organizations. Dave holds a bachelor’s degree in forestry from Purdue University and a master’s degree in wildlife ecology from the University of Michigan.
