Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake: Biology, Habitat, Protections, and Best Management Practices

The eastern massasauga rattlesnake (EMR) was listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act in October 2016, primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Shaughn will provide an overview of the biology of EMR, review their distribution and habitat needs in Michigan, and discuss approaches for maintaining and improving EMR habitat.
Shaughn Galloway—U.S. Fish and Wildlife Biologist and Transportation Liaison Michigan Ecological Services Field Office
Shaughn started working with the USFWS in 2017 and transferred to the Michigan Ecological Services Field Office in October 2020 to work as the Transportation Liaison. Shaughn has a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation from the University of Nevada – Reno and a Master of Science in Geographic Information Science and Technology from the University of Southern California. His primary interest is using spatial analysis to improve wildlife management and habitat connectivity.
