The Headwaters Cluster was the first Stewardship Network local Cluster to form in the fall of 2003. The Michigan Chapter of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) led the formation of the Cluster as a way to build cooperative relationships between the various agencies who were repsonsible for managing high quality ecosystem areas under protection in Oakland County and surrounding areas, thereby enhancing the stewardship of those areas. Oakland County is home to the headwaters of five different river systems along with an exceptional ecological diversity and is experienceing extreme development pressure on remaining natural areas.

What is a CWMA?
The Headwaters Cluster is becoming an official CWMA!
A Cooperative Weed Management Area (CWMA) is a local organization that brings together all invasive plant management efforts in an area in order to benefit entire communities. Through the Headwaters Cluster, many groups around Oakland County have built informal partnerships to fight invasive plants. A CWMA is a federal designation which more formally solidifies the principles we have worked towards already as a Cluster while providing us with more opportunities for support and recognition. In becoming a CWMA, we will continue to work together to share resources and create a highly effective long-term strategy for dealing with invasive species.

What is Black Swallow Wort?
Northwest Oakland County boasts a vibrant community of equestrian farms, large land parcels, and many special natural areas. These are all threatened by the invasiveness of swallow wort. As a vine, swallow wort has the potential to both crowd out and choke native vegetation.
