8:15am – 5:30pm
Friday’s program includes keynote speaker Henry Lickers, Director of the Department of Environment for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, and presentations by leading scientists on current research findings in the areas of fire, water, and wildlife ecology. Presentations will include panel discussions and question and answer sessions. The Friday session will also include a poster reception with exhibits on a variety of subjects relating to ecological restoration, such as natural areas ecology and stewardship, native habitats, successful partnerships, and policy innovations.
Friday Keynote Speaker – Henry Lickers

Henry Lickers is a Haudenosaunee citizen of the Seneca Nation and a member of the Turtle Clan. For many years Henry has been the Director of the Department of Environment for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. He has shared his expertise in environmental science and traditional wisdom with numerous international, national, and local organizations, including the International Joint Commission's Great Lakes Science Advisory Board. He has also mentored many young members of the First Nations, teaching them the ways of modern science, strengthened by the insights and values of his own people. Henry is a captivating speaker who will provide a unique perspective on our ecological restoration efforts.

Friday Evening Program – The Power of Story
7:30pm – 9:30pm
Three great storytellers – author Keith Taylor from the University of Michigan, poet and essayist Alison Swan, and Michigan Radio’s The Environment Report Senior Editor/Correspondent Lester Graham – will join us for this engaging program on storytelling. Inspired environmental action incorporates scientific theory, hands-on practice, and art, especially the art of storytelling. The stories we tell of the lands we want to protect and restore help to build a deep respect for all parts of the environment. These three storytellers will spark a lively discussion about how our stories can help others see value in our work and in the communities we represent.

Saturday morning will begin with a Stewardship Cluster breakfast, enabling you to socialize and network with your colleagues and peers who live, work, and play near you. Saturday’s program will begin with a keynote presentation by Gerould Wilhelm, the principal botanist/ecologist at Conservation Design Forum, a national leader in sustainable land planning and design. The remainder of Saturday’s program is devoted to three series of concurrent hands-on sessions on a variety of topics relating to the science, practice, and art of restoring native ecosystems ending with lunch and an opportunity to network with your previously known and newly found peers and colleagues.
Saturday, Keynote Speaker – Gerould Wilhelm
Dr. Gerould Wilhelm is the principal botanist/ecologist at Conservation Design Forum. He has become a pre-eminent botanist in his field, conducting floristic inventories and field evaluations of ecosystems throughout North America. This experience has culminated in his co-authoring Plants of the Chicago Region, only one of two such works in the world rated as “excellent” by Robert Frodin, author of A Geographic Guide to the Floras of the World. Not only a leader in the promotion of a philosophy of environmental sustainability with design professionals, Jerry donates his time to work with volunteer stewards to teach them monitoring methods and data analysis, ecological restoration activities, and plant identification throughout the Midwest.
