Science & Practice of Restoration

History of Stewardship Network's Science and Practice of Restoration Symposia:

Each year the Network brings together researchers and practitioners to help ensure that the latest research results get implemented in the field and that the questions from the field make it to those who have the means to research the answers.

Science & Practice III - 2007

Science & Practice III held on June 15, 2007 focused on the globally threatened oak savanna ecosystems. This all day session followed our monthly webcast with Stephen Packard of Chicago Audubon and Ryan O'Connor on Lost Landscapes: Rediscovering Oak Savannas. Academics, researchers, agency personnel, non-profit representatives, volunteers, land owners, and nature enthusiasts attended this session at the Michigan State University MacCready Reserve near Jackson Michigan. Participants were able to learn about and see first hand the ecological restoration of oak savanna, prairie fen and hillside prairie communities. The morning included talks by people with significant experience from Michigan Natural Features Inventory, The Nature Conservancy, The Stewardship Network, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan State University and tours of the MSU MacCready Reserve and hands-on demonstration of invasvie species management took place in the afternoon.

Science & Practice II - 2006

Science & Practice II featured academic and other researchers; volunteers; and land managers coming together for an afternoon on Monday, March 6th. Presentations include the latest research on genotype issues, planning for landscape-scale conservation, prioritizing areas for large-scale restoration, and interactions between diseases and exotic/native grasses. Science & Practice II was held in conjunction with the Wildflower Association of Michigan annual conference in East Lansing.

Science & Practice I - 2005

Science & Practice I kicked off our efforts to bring researchers and practitioners together. For one day in May 2005 researchers and practitioners from around the state gathered at Michigan State University's campus to share ideas and information and develop collaborative projects.
