The St. Croix River Association (SCRA) is currently recruiting applicants for a Namekagon River Ambassador internship during the summer of 2018. SCRA is a nonprofit organization that protects, restores and celebrates the St. Croix River and its watershed, and serves as the official non-profit partner of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.

The Riverway, one of the nation’s first wild and scenic rivers, is a National Park consisting of 255 river miles that flow through some of the most scenic and least developed country in the Upper Midwest. Learn more at:

This intern will work closely with the interpretation staff at the Cable Natural History Museum, and the SCRA as a River Ambassador. The goal of this program is to raise awareness of this National Park and strengthen public understanding of the river and its surrounding environment.

Description of Internship
This position is under the guidance of the St. Croix River Association and the Cable Natural History Museum, with support from the National Park Service, providing the intern with practical work experience in community engagement and educational outreach.

The intern will work with mentors to create opportunities for park visitors to understand the significance of the Riverway and its resources. This intern will:
• Observe natural environmental conditions for potential safety hazards and support communication efforts focused on safe and responsible recreation.
• Assist the public with planning for river trips and other recreational opportunities.
• Perform interpretive and orientation services in informal settings at river landings, farmers markets and on the river while kayaking.
• Present thematic programs to diverse audiences, including programs focusing on macroinvertebrates and other aspects of river ecology.
• Lead kayak trips and stewardship activities.
• Assist with special events, museum activities, outreach and special projects as necessary.

Skills Required
• Must be a US citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
• College student or recent graduate with coursework in natural, physical or cultural sciences; resource interpretation; natural or cultural resource management; outdoor recreation; or communication.
• General knowledge of the National Park Service or St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is helpful.
• Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team, be detail-oriented and organized, and to follow oral and written directions.
• Good oral and written communication skills, as well as basic computer familiarity.
• Valid state driver's license is required, as is experience with canoeing and kayaking.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, and stand for extended periods of time.
• Ability to provide information and safety messages to the public and Riverway visitors.

Work Site and Conditions
• Intern will be based on the Namekagon River in the Hayward, Wisconsin area, and with desk space at the Cable Natural History Museum.
• Work in the field is required and will involve physical activity, including walking, standing for long periods of time, and paddling a kayak or canoe at a variety of Riverway locations, in all weather conditions.
• An internship from May 14 to August 17 is preferred; however the length of the internship is negotiable.
• Weekend work and some evening work are required, with a typical schedule being Tuesday through Saturday.
